Role-Playing Games Week Recap 7/19/2021
This week in the weekly recap we will see another record fall and a handheld announcement.
Legend of Zelda loses out
Last week a sealed copy of NES Legend of Zelda sold for $870,000. Well, that record didn’t last long as a sealed copy of Super Mario 64 sold for $1.56 million. I guess it was fun while it lasted.
Valve announces the “Steam Deck”
Nintendo better watch out. Nintendo has been bullish to upgrade the switch. I don’t blame them since they are still selling really well. But it looks like Valve wanted in on the handheld hardware piece of the pie and is releasing a direct competitor. Word has it that the preorders and crazy high. But I have a feeling most of those are scalpers who just want to see the world burn.
The specs on these devices look incredible and will probably spawn a handheld console war. This handheld will be able to dock with an external monitor and also sports motion controls. I look forward to being able to stream games from a PC to this device soon.
Netflix wants in on video games
Rumors are coming in hard that Netflix will add video games to its streaming service starting sometime in 2022. This makes sense as I fully believe the market is moving to a streaming model. Why wouldn’t the biggest video streamer start to stream video games and get in on the cut. It will be surprising to see if they keep the fees the same or if it will be a premium to play games.
