While exploring dungeons and completing quests in Chained Echoes you may find some “rusty” weapons. Their use isn’t evident until late in the game. But these “rusty” weapons are used as the base to create the ultimate weapons.
How do you unlock the Ultimate Weapons?
To unlock the ultimate weapons you will need to do three things.
- Find the blacksmith in the sky
- Acquire the rusty version of the weapon
- Have a Soul of Farnese to unlock the ultimate weapon
How to find the blacksmith in the sky
If you are early in the game, you might wonder where the blacksmith is located. Well, you can only find the blacksmith late in the game. Once you unlock the Magic Academy Nhysa you will eventually have a big battle with Whyatt.
After taking out Whyatt you will find a courtyard and if you enter one of the libraries there is a note you can read. This will trigger the side quest A Hammer Beating in the Sky.
Now from here, you can get into your airship and head west to find a floating island. This is the home to Vaehl the blacksmith of the sky. He will tell you of the ultimate weapons he created and how they always seem to return to him.
Where to find the rusty version of the weapon
Each ultimate weapon has a rusty version. And more than likely you have acquired several of them by this point in the game. Here are the locations of each rusty weapon:
Rusty Sword
The Rusty Sword is a reward for a side quest. If you have completed the side quest Into the Maelstrom for Magnolia then you should already have the Rusty Sword.
The Rusty Sword is Glenn’s ultimate weapon and once the blacksmith forges the Rusty Sword it will become Durandal.
Rusty Bow
After you have completed the main quest Chained Echoes (yes the quest is named after the game), head to the Kortara Mountain Range and find the town of Flandern. If you have been there before there should be a fast travel location in Flandern.
This is where you find out more about Robb and his family and this will unlock the side quest No Place for Happy Endings. After completing this side quest you will be rewarded with the Rusty Bow. The Rusty Bow is Robb’s ultimate weapon and once the blacksmith forges the Rusty Bow it will become Pinaka.
Rusty Rapier
Once you have acquired Sky Armor the area containing the Rusty Rapier is available to you in Rohlan Fields. The first thing you need to do is acquire the Manor Key which is north of the Eternal Flame Temple. Once you have the Manor Key head to the center of Rohlan Fields to the big island in the middle of the water.
The manor is only accessible with Sky Armor so proceed inside to find the Rusty Rapier. The Rusty Rapier is Victor’s ultimate weapon and once the blacksmith forges the Rusty Rapier it will become Pappenheimer.
Rusty Spear
If you have found the Leonar Temples then you should have found the Rusty Spear. But in case you missed it there are a few steps to unlock the Leonar Temple locations.
When you find the Church Key at the Empyrean Ruins you can go to an abandoned church in Perpetua and examine the painting this will allow you to take on Leonar’s Challenges and find the Leonar Temples.
The Rusty Spear is located within the same Temple that the Rune Knight class emblem is located and is west (left) of Perpetua. The Rusty Spear is Lenne’s ultimate weapon and once the blacksmith forges the Rusty Spear it will become Gae Bulg.
Rusty Gunspear
The Rusty Gunspear will also require Sky Armor. It is located in Shambala and is only accessible after you disable all the ASACs (Anti Sky Armor Cannons) in Shambala. Head to the northeast part of Shambala to an isolated island and find the Rusty Gunspear.
The Rusty Gunspear is Egyl’s ultimate weapon and once the blacksmith forges the Rusty Gunspear it will become Vel.
Rusty Gun
In Camp located in the south Fiorwoods, you will meet Jack. After he is done cutting the trees he reveals an area you can find the Rusty Gun.
The Rusty Gun is Amelia’s ultimate weapon and once the blacksmith forges the Rusty Gun it will become Jager.
Rusty Amulet
If you have found the Leonar Temples then you should have found the Rusty Amulet. But in case you missed it there are a few steps to unlock the Leonar Temple locations.
When you find the Church Key at the Empyrean Ruins you can go to an abandoned church in Perpetua and examine the painting this will allow you to take on Leonar’s Challenges and find the Leonar Temples.
The Rusty Amulet is located within the same Temple that the Pyromancer class emblem is located and is north of Flandern. The Rusty Amulet is Ba’Thraz’s ultimate weapon and once the blacksmith forges the Rusty Amulet it will become Lapis Lazuli Amulet.
Rusty Katana
To obtain the Rusty Katana you will have to not only progress far into the main story but also have acquired the Balthasar Sky Armor. After you have completed the Chained Echoes quest in the main story you can go to the Kortara Mountain Range where there is a camp.
Sneak into this camp and you will get the side-quest Two-Winged Angel where you can get the Balthasar Sky Armor. Once you have purchased the Sky Armor Norgant will sell you the Rusty Katana.
The Rusty Katana is Sienna’s ultimate weapon and once the blacksmith forges the Rusty Katana it will become Masamune.
Rusty Greatsword
The Rusty Greatsword is another weapon that you won’t find until late in the game. When you are in the Nyhsa area where you find the lore book to unlock the mission A Hammer Beating in the Sky, there is a key you can obtain.
This Elevator Key is for the Raminas Tower and if you go to the ground floor you come out in the Ograne Grottos. If you head west and then south there is a rat in a room and this rat is a secret vendor. He sells you the Rusty Greatsword along with some other important items.
The Rusty Greatsword is Raphael’s ultimate weapon and once the blacksmith forges the Rusty Greatsword it will become Sin Eater.
Rusty Knuckles
The Rusty Knuckles is unlocked on your Rewards Board after a chain of 96 rewards. Once you have a chain of 96 claim the Rusty Knuckles reward.
The Rusty Knuckles is Mikah’s ultimate weapon and once the blacksmith forges the Rusty Knuckles it will become Vajra-Mushti.
Rusty Anchor
In New Wyrhnshire you may run into a lizard that gives you a side quest A Little Vacation. After completing this side quest there will be a new island unlocked called Vacation Island. This island is located in the southeast part of the world map.
On the island, you will find the Rusty Anchor. The Rusty Anchor is Tomke’s ultimate weapon and once the blacksmith forges the Rusty Anchor it will become Northilol.
Rusty Cards
In order to obtain the Rusty Cards you must defeat all of the Unique Monsters and turn them into the Adventurer’s Guild.

After defeating all monsters the Guild will reward you with the Rusty Cards. The Rusty Cards are Magnolia’s ultimate weapon and once the blacksmith forges the Rusty Cards they will become Royal Cards.
Where to acquire a Soul of Farnese
In order for the blacksmith to complete the weapon you must spend one Soul of Farnese. If you found a golden chest then more than likely it contained a Soul of Farnese. Here are the Soul of Farnese locations:
Rohlan Fields
Accessed through the Baalrut Tunnel. In the Ograne Grottos after you have exited the Raminas Tower head to the east and find the boat. Take the boat and find an area you can jump down into. These will be some dark tunnels where you will have to “feel” your way around.
You will eventually come out in a few locations but one of the locations is a climb into Rohlan Fields where the golden chest will be located.
Narslene Sewers
Accessed through the Baalrut Tunnel. In the Ograne Grottos after you have exited the Raminas Tower head to the east and find the boat. Take the boat and find an area you can jump down into. These will be some dark tunnels where you will have to “feel” your way around.
You will eventually come out in a few locations but one of the locations is exited into the Narslene Sewers. Find the broken handle and reverse the flow of the water. Once you reverse the flow you can jump back in and get to the chest.
Flower Fields of Perpetua
In the desert in the south of Perpetua, you will notice large arrows in the sand. Follow those arrows until you find a big X. X marks the spot!
In the southwestern portion of Perpetua, there are some fungus pads that you can unlock. If you unlock enough of them you will reach another Soul of Farnese.
Rymeier Castle (Kortara Mountain Range)
Start the side quest for Rob No Place for Happy Endings. While in the Rymeier castle head to the rooftops and find another Soul of Farnese. Take a hidden path that is marked by red carpets.
Phioran Village (Arkant Archipelago)
You will either need a Diving Bell (purchased from the secret vendor in Ograne Grottos) or if you have recruited all clan members you can gain access through the entrance located in the Arkant Archipelago.

In the southeast portion of the Phioran village, there is a hidden passage that leads to the north. Follow it to find the chest.
Arkant Archipelago
This one is only accessible if you have Sky Armor and have deactivated all the ASACs in the area. Head to the northwest area and look for a chest.
Complete Side Quest – A Little Vacation
Just as you needed to finish this quest to find the Rusty Anchor, once you complete the side quest A Little Vacation you will receive a Soul of Farnese as a reward.
Norgant in the Kortara Mountain Range
Norgant is in the camp in the Kortara Mountain Range. If you acquired the Rusty Katana then Norgant will also sell you a Soul of Farnese. This is available after completing the side quest Two Winged Angel.
Hermit’s Isle
There are actually 2 Soul of Farnese that are available on your home base of Hermit’s Isle.
The 1st one is obtained when your clan reaches level 4. Bernd will find a cave with a treasure chest that contains the soul.
The 2nd one is fished out of the ocean by Triony. It is the only thing he will ever catch for you.

Reward Board
The last one is fairly easy to obtain. Simply string together a chain of 112 on the rewards board and you will be awarded a Soul of Farnese.
The Ultimate Weapons are the best weapons you can acquire. But I would say you can beat the final boss without them if you don’t want to go through the trouble of all these steps. But having the ultimate weapons fully upgraded with good crystals slotted will make that battle a lot easier.
